On the 21st February 2008 we visited 2 farms that are located 1 mile apart in Kent.
Farmer Profit
Farmer Loss
Both farms had planted winter wheat crop at about the same time. The first picture shows the land where there are no (or very few) rabbits. We have called him Farmer Profit. On the right is the second farm which we have called Farmer Loss.
Farmer Loss has about 100 acres that have been completely eaten by the surrounding rabbit population. This farm is surrounded by banks and hedgerows with lots of rabbits. (You can see some of the warrens in the Picture Gallery). On the day we were there we saw over 30 rabbits on the land. The pictures are self explanatory. Farmer Loss will eventually yield about 5 or 6 tons of grain to the acre. Farmer Profit will most likely yield between 8 and 10 tons. Apart from the additional costs involved for Farmer Loss to boost his yield, he will also harvest about 300 to 500 tons less than Farmer Profit.
At last years grain prices Farmer Profit could make as much as £50,000 to £85,000 more on his 100 acres than Farmer Loss.
If you have rabbits eating your profits, you probably already know how much you are loosing and you still have the summer, autumn and winter to think about.
